Washington: As billions of people on Earth stare at an imminent water shortage, precious, ancient water is being released into the lunar atmosphere by meteor showers from the Moon that can hamper future long-term exploration on the lunar surface.

Researchers from NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, found that streams of meteoroids striking the Moon infuse the thin lunar atmosphere with a short-lived water vapour.
