Southwest Monsoon Touches Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Southwest monsoon has touched Odisha and is likely to cover the entire State by June 17, informed the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar through a tweet on Thursday.

“The southwest monsoon has started advancing in some parts of Odisha, mainly in southern districts. While the monsoon has completely touched Malkangiri and Koraput, it touched some portions of Nabarangpur, Rayaganada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts,” said Director of the Meteorological Centre, HR Biswas.

The conditions are favourable and the monsoon is likely to advance further in the State in the next 48 hours, added the Met Centre Director.

Biswas had earlier said that the southwest monsoon will reach Odisha by June 11 or 12, however, it arrived in the State today.

Worth mentioning, monsoon usually sets in Odisha from June 10 and therefore it can be said that the Southwest monsoon this year touched the State in one day advance.

“The low pressures are over east-central and adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal now lies over west-central & adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh­ South Odisha coasts,” stated Biswas.

In the next 24 hours, most places of the southern and coastal Odisha will likely receive light to moderate rainfall while many places of north-interior Odisha will witness rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm.

Similarly, Koraput and Malkangiri districts are likely to receive heavy to very rainfall in the next 24 hours while many places of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Puri will heavy rainfall under the influence of the low-pressure. Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore might experience rainfall with thunderstorm activities.

Besides, northern-interior districts including Khurda, Cuttack Jajpur and Bhadrak might experience moderate rain with thunderstorm.

The southwest monsoon had arrived on Kerala on June 1, making it a timely onset over the southern states for the first time since 2013. The IMD had said that the country is expected to receive normal rainfall during June to September season this year, with the season’s rainfall is expected to be around 103 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).

Last year, the southwest monsoon had arrived in Odisha with a delay of around one week on June 21.
