A woman and her five daughters, including a 15-day-old infant, were rescued and relocated to a shelter home in Dhenkanal district after her husband allegedly assaulted and expelled her for not giving birth to a son.
According to sources, the incident took place in Muruga village under Bhuban block, prompting intervention from human rights activists and renewed scrutiny of previous complaints filed with local police.
Woman Driven Out Of Home
Reports from Bhuban stated that the victim was allegedly forced out of her home late Friday night along with her five daughters. With no alternative shelter, she took refuge at the veranda of the Bhuban Community Health Centre (CHC), where health staff noticed the family during routine rounds.
Sources said that the incident happened after the woman had delivered her fifth daughter 15 days ago. Following the birth, her husband, identified as Chaitanya Nayak, allegedly assaulted her and accused her of “failing to produce a male heir” before driving her and the children out of their residence.
The CHC staff informed local volunteers, who then alerted human rights groups operating in the region.
Allegations Of Repeated Assault
Sources added that Chaitanya was living at his in-laws’ house in Muruga village. Over the years, the couple had five daughters, but relatives claim that Chaitanya repeatedly assaulted the victim, alleging that she was responsible for the absence of a male child.
The pattern of abuse reportedly worsened after each childbirth and escalated further following the most recent delivery. On the night of the incident, Chaitanya allegedly told Sulochana that she had “no right to stay in the house” before assaulting and forcing her and the children out.
Witnesses reported that the infant, along with the four older daughters, aged between two and twelve, were with their mother when they arrived at the health centre premises.

Human Rights Activist Arranges Emergency Relocation
Human rights worker Pushpanjali Rana reached the health centre on Sunday morning after receiving a phone call from a local health worker. On interacting with the survivor, she coordinated with the district administration to shift the six-member family to a shelter home located in the Gandia area.
Rana said previous complaints had already been submitted, but no follow-up occurred. “We had filed a written complaint with the Bhuban police station authorities regarding the victim’s husband torturing her, but they have not taken any action so far,” Rana said, adding that the pattern of physical assault had been consistent for years.
Family Alleges Assault On Children
The victim’s mother said that she had filed a complaint nearly two months ago alleging that Chaitanya had assaulted both Sulochana and the children. She also stated that her son-in-law was involved in an extramarital relationship and frequently threatened her daughter over the absence of a male child.
“Despite having five daughters, he wanted a son and out of this frustration, beat and hurt the girls. He is involved in an affair with another woman. I had filed an FIR about two months back, but no one has acted upon it. I have no one else to go to,” Mohana said.
She claimed that they approached both the Bhuban police station and the Dhenkanal district police office with written complaints, but no action was taken before the latest incident.
