Nayagarh: A rock shelter believed to be ancient has come to limelight near Badhipatna village in Nayagarh district. The site has now turned into a crowd puller with people in the region thronging the place in large number to witness the cave.

Gopinath Sahoo, a local who lives nearby, claims that he used to hear folklore when many hermits and ‘sadhus’ lived in the hills.

Even though the exact structure of the rock cave is unknown, residents say that there are three room-like spaces inside which can be assessed but with difficulty.

"Paths to some are extremely narrow while many are inaccessible. We believe that there are seven rooms inside the cave," said an elated visitor to the cave.

“I used to listen to stories on the cave and they were fascinating. Sometimes I also heard people saying that sounds of cymbals, ghanta used to reverberate from the cave mostly during the night," said one Gutu Patnak.

Local OTV representative also tried to inspect the caves and found that only three rooms could be reached while other rooms are not accessible due to the narrow pathways.

Residents of the area have demand the administration and archaeological experts to launch a thorough inspection of the cave and find out the details like origin and whether people lived in them.
