Deogarh: In a tragic incident, two brothers drowned while crossing a canal on a banana tree raft in flood-hit Bari block of Jajpur district on Saturday.

The two brothers have been identified as Subhrajit Behera and Mitan Behera of Meduakul village under Bari block of the district.

Reportedly, the duo was crossing the canal on the banana tree raft at around 11.30 to collect grass for their cattle when it overturned and the two brothers drowned.

Though locals rescued Subhrajit and rushed him to Ramachandra Hospital, he was declared dead by the doctors.

Mitan, who went missing in the canal water, was later rescued by the Bari fire personnel and immediately rushed to the hospital. However, he was also declared brought dead.

Bari is one among worst flood-hit blocks of Jajpur district. Over 1.7 lakh people in 29 panchayats of Bari block have been severely affected after floodwater from Brahmani and Kharasrota rivers washed away houses and damaged crops in over 10,000 hectare of farmland.
