Berhampur: As many as three temples in Berhampur were sealed on Saturday on charges of flouting Covid-19 protocols on the first day of Navratri puja.

As per reports, a joint team of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) and Ganjam district administration conducted surprised visits at several temples in Berhampur city yesterday.

The officials sealed Maa Kali Temple near Bijipur, Bijipur Thakurani Temple and Ganesh Temple after the shrine authorities were found not abiding by the Covid-19 restrictions.

Official sources said hundreds of people attended the Navratri ceremony at Maa Kali Temple violating the Covid-19 norms.

Ganjam district Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange informed that the sealed temples will remain closed for nine days i.e. during the entire Navratri and the keys of the temples will be handed to the concerned temple authorities later.

In a related incident, a shopping mall which was recently inaugurated near Kalinga Road in Aska block of Ganjam district was sealed by the district administration on Saturday.

After getting a tip-off about the violation of Covid-19 norms in the mall, a team of Sub-Collector of Bhanjanagar, Aska police, local Tehsildar and Block Development Officer (BDO) rushed to the spot and sealed the shopping mall.

Reports said, hundreds of people were found inside the mall flouting social distancing and mandatory use of mask guidelines of the State government.
