Bhubaneswar: The number of Covid-19 cases in Odisha breached 8,000-mark today as the State recorded its highest single-day spike in coronavirus infections.

Two more persons succumbed to Covid-19 while 561 persons tested positive for the virus taking the State's coronavirus death toll to 29 and positive tally to 8106 on Friday, informed State I& PR Department.

Of the new cases detected from 19 districts of Odisha, 425 positives were reported from quarantine centres while the remaining 136 are local contact cases.

On the other hand, two more persons from Ganjam district succumbed to the disease. With this, the Covid-19 death toll in the State rose to 29.

Ganjam reported the whopping 283 cases followed by Cuttack (81), Rayagada (76), Khurda (26), Bargarh (21), Bolangir (19), Mayurbhanj (10), Sambalpur (8), Keonjhar (6), Jagatsinghpur (6), Kalahandi (5) and Koraput (4). Similarly, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Sundargarh districts reported three cases each while Jharsuguda and Kendrapara detected two cases each, and Bhadrak and Puri reported one case each.

Besides, one NDRF personnel who was sent for carrying out rescue and restoration work to West Bengal post-cyclone Amphan also tested positive for coronavirus infection.

The two persons who lost their lives due to coronavirus infection belonged to Ganjam district. While one was a 66-year-old male patient and was suffering from Hypertension, the other patient was a 40-year-old male and he was also suffering from Diabetes.

With 283 new cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Ganjam district reached 1,850 which include 742 active cases, 1,090 recoveries, and 17 deaths.

A total of 6,851‬ RT-PCR tests were conducted in the last 24 hours in Odisha taking the cumulative tests to 281523.

Apart from the new COVID-19 cases, as many as 203 persons recuperated from coronavirus infection in Odisha, taking the total recoveries to 5,705.
