Koraput: Machhkund Police seized nearly 712 kilogram of ganja worth around Rs 70 lakh from a pickup truck near Bhedibada of the district on Saturday night.

During night patrolling, police intercepted the vehicle near Bhedibeda as the ganja was being smuggled from Andhra Pradesh to Jeypore area. However, the driver managed to escape.

According to police sources, over 1,054 quintal of ganja has been seized in Odisha by various State agencies between January 1 and September 30 this year.

The maximum seizure of the contraband was made from Koraput (420 quintal), Malkangiri (240 quintal) and Gajapati (126 quintal).

While an average seizure of 312 quintal was made in the last 10 years, this figure was 414 quintal in the last five years. The cumulative seizure of ganja is nearly 2.5 times more than the average seizure in the last five years, said sources.
