Malkangiri: Flood-like situation in the Southern-Odisha district of Malkangiri has brought about unprecedented plight for its residents. In a glaring example of how normal life has been thrown out of gear, a dead body was carried on shoulders through a flooded road by the bereaved family in the district.

Sources said Raju Motam from Biliguda village of the district was bitten by a snake a week back. Though he was immediately brought to the District Headquarters Hospital in Malkangiri, he succumbed to the snakebite last night while undergoing treatment.

The ordeal for the family did not end there as more trouble was in store for them on their way back to village. With incessant rain over the last few days already crippling normal life in the district, the family got stuck in a flooded road. On their way to Biliguda from Malkangiri town, relatives of Raju were forced to carry the body on their shoulders through waist-deep water after their vehicle got stranded in floodwater from a swelling Kankarkonda river.

The low pressure-induced rain in the past four days has triggered flood-like situation in several parts of Odisha. Several areas in the district of Malkangiri are now reportedly cut-off from other parts of the State.

District Collector, Manish Agrawal has assured that the situation in Malkangiri is under control. “We have rescued 20 odd people who were stranded on road after some of the low lying bridges were submerged in floodwater and no casualties have been reported till now,” said Agrawal.
