Bhubaneswar: Odisha born Simi Karan has secured All India Rank 31 in her first attempt at the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2019. The 22-year-old Simi has achieved the milestone that people hardly even dream of at her age.

Simi reportedly hails from Santoshpur village in Balasore district. She was a student of IIT Mumbai and is currently staying in Bhilai (Chhattisgarh). Her father is working at Bhilai steel plant and posted as general manager in the unit's finance department.

Speaking to OTV, Simi said that the approach towards the exam is important for success. “Self-determination is important and I think, hard work along with smart work is key to crack the UPSC exam,” she said.

She said that she started preparation for the UPSC civil services exam when she was in the final year. “When I was in IIT Mumbai, I used to prepare for around 6-7 hours but after the completion of college, I devoted 10 to 12 hours to be ready for the exam.”

On her schedule and plan for preparation, Simi said, “I had made proper planning for the preparation. I used to set targets- monthly, weekly and even hourly targets.”

Simi further said that her life changed when she started teaching slum children and after seeing their struggle, she decided to contribute towards changing lives of deprived people.

“As an IAS officer, I would like to mainly work towards women empowerment and education as development in these sectors can bring drastic change in the country. Though women are also getting equal opportunities in comparison to men, it has been seen over the years that we lag behind… May be because, we lack psychological support and leadership qualities. I can feel it as a woman and know the challenges.”

Over 20 candidates from Odisha are in the list of aspirants recommended for appointment to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.
