Bhubaneswar: Teenagers, mostly students are now actively involved in illegal narcotics trade in Odisha, which is not only a major challenge for the law enforcing authorities, but a consternating trend for the civil society. From engineering students to MBAs, youngsters are fast getting ensnared in the narcotics trap.

The recent arrest of an MBA student by the Crime Branch STF from Balasore and seizure 1.325 kgs of brown sugar worth nearly Rs 1.30 crore has brought this ugly trend to fore.

The accused, identified as Sheikh Riazuddin, is a resident of Machuapada and is pursuing MBA in Bhubaneswar.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused is a third year MBA student in a management college in Bhubaneswar. As the college is closed in view of Covid-19, he returned to his village and got involved in drug trade. Other aspects of the case are under investigation,” said STF SP, Prashant Kumar Bhoi.

A senior official requesting anonymity said there could be multiple reasons behind students getting involved in narcotics trade and making quick bucks is one the prime lures. Apart from the money, youngsters often get trapped and fail to come out of it easily.

“Usually lack of financial support from family and desire to live a lavish life are reasons that drive students to get involved in such illegal jobs,” said an officer.
