Sundergarh: A leopard was found dead on the railway tracks near Badarampia village in Sundergarh district on Wednesday. The carcass was recovered from the railway tracks under Hemagiri forest range in the district.

Though speculations were rife that the big cat was killed before being thrown on the railway tracks to give it a colour of accident, but the theory was later quashed by the Chief Wildlife Warden of Odisha, Harishankar Upadhyay.

Upadhyay Said, “I don’t see any merit in the accusation that the leopard was killed by some men. However, a detailed inquiry will be done in this case before I can confirm the actual reason.”

Following the incident, Sundergarh DFO, Rourkela RPF and a veterinary team reached the spot and have launched a probe into the matter.

Shedding more light on the incident, Upadhyay said that “The Railways has been asked for the details of the trains that were running during the time of the accident. The DFO of Sundergarh has also been directed to furnish a report as soon as possible.”

The theory that the leopard might have been killed by the locals emerged from the reports yesterday that a leopard had intruded into the Badarampia village and attacked several people injuring four in the process. All the injured are now under treatment in Hemagiri hospital.
