Malkangiri: As many as 36 people have been arrested on charges of killing a home guard, Banabasi Maharana at Chaulamendi forest on Monday.

Banabasi was allegedly hacked to death on Sunday while opposing marijuana (ganja) smugglers.

According to reports, around 70 ganja traders attacked a team of Balimela police station officials in Malkangiri district when the cops tried to stop them from smuggling marijuana late Saturday night.

“Most of the policemen suffered injuries in the scuffle. However, home guard Banabasi suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital,” said Rishikesh Khilari, the superintendent of police.

After reaching the hospital, Maharana succumbed to his injuries. His mortal remains were buried at his home village Sunanata village in Ganjam.

Meanwhile, Odisha government has promised financial aid to the family of the deceased.

Further investigation in connection with the incident to nab the other accused is underway.
