Malkangiri: Around 70 ganja traders attacked a team of Balimela police station official in Malkangiri district when the cops tried to stop them from smuggling marijuana to neighbouring State late Saturday night.

A home guard identified as Banabasi Maharana, who had received critical injuries in the attack, died while undergoing treatment at Mahili Community Health Centre (CHC).

Acting on a tip-off about the smuggling of marijuana, a team of Balimela Police reportedly intercepted around 70 ganja traders who were engaged in transporting the narcotics on their shoulders from Chitrakonda to Chhattisgarh through Balimela-Mathili forest yesterday night.

However, the traders reportedly attack the police team and fled the spot taking advantage of the darkness in the jungle.

Meanwhile, Malkangiri SP Rishikesh D Khilari rushed the spot and took stock of the situation. Further investigation in connection with the incident is underway.
