Puri: At least one person was injured in a group clash that erupted after a resident of Nisibhanar village in Puri district reportedly escaped from quarantine centre and later tested positive for Covid-19.

The returnee, who was lodged in quarantine centre after his return from Delhi, tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday. Before his test result was announced, the man had reportedly escaped to the village without completing the mandatory period in quarantine.

Locals fumed after witnessing him moving around the village and meeting several people even though he had returned without being formally released from the quarantine centre.

The incident sparked a clash between two groups of villagers and bombs were also hurled in the area. At least one person was injured during the clash and later admitted to Nuagaon Community Health Centre (CHC).

Some houses have sustained damages in the bombing incident, as per initial reports. Adequate police force has been deployed keeping in view palpable tension in the village.

Meanwhile, Puri SP, Akhilesvar Singh on Friday said, “There was a clash between residents of 2 villages last night. We have arrested one person and a case has been registered against all the accused. We will not spare anyone involved in the case.”

“There was a dispute between two villages over entry of an outsider in whose village a COVID-19 infection was reported. After the said youth was denied entry, the clash erupted.” Singh added.
