Bhubaneswar: Noted lyricist and screenwriter of Odisha, Bijay Mishra passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 83.
A pioneer of modern theatre movement and playwright in Odia Film industry, Mishra was recipient of many accolades in the state as well as national level.
He won the Kendriya Sahitya Akademi award for his play Vanaprastha in the genre of drama. He also won Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award and other state-level awards. He received the prestigious Jayadev Award for his lifetime contribution to Odia film industry during the 30th Odisha State Film Awards last year.
Mishra began playwright from 1960 and his first play “Janani” was staged in Annapurna Theatre, Cuttack. He was honoured with the Think Foundation CSR Lifetime Achievement Award.
His play Tata Niranjana has been translated in Hindi, Nepali, Kannada and in several other Indian languages which won him a national award from All India Radio.
About 50 Odia films to his credit, Mishra was the screenplay writer of Tarang’s popular mythological serial “Sri Jagannath’.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and several other noted personalities expressed grief over the passing away of the veteran dramatist.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan condoled the death of Mishra and said his contribution to the field of Odia literature and theatre is incomparable.

BJP National Vice President Jay Panda also mourned the demise of Mishra and conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
“Passing away of Mishra is an irreparable loss to Odia literary fraternity & film industry,” Panda said.

In his condolence message, Union Minister Pratap Sarangi said Mishra, who hailed from his constituency, had deep affection towards him.
I deeply mourn the sad demise of Shri Bijay Mishra, a great dramatist, lyricist and film director of Odisha. He belongs to my constituency and made all of us proud. He had deep affection towards me and I had the good fortune of inaugurating one of his dramas, a few months back.

Creative Head of OTV Network- Ranjan Satpathy said, “I am deeply saddened by the shocking news of the demise of Bijay Mishra. He had written ‘Tash Ra Ghara’ which was my first project in my career as a producer. We can say he was the father of Odia screenplay.”
