Rayagada: The district administration of Rayagada reported a massive spike of 495 Novel-Coronavirus infections on Friday out of which 157 positives were from the Rayagada sub-jail alone, informed the sub-jailor of the prison.

Similarly, Gunupur sub-jail under Rayagada district also reported 61 positive cases on Friday taking the total number of infections in jails in the district to 218.

As per the District Collector, Pramod Behera, all the infected inmates have been shifted to the isolation wards.

“The 157 positives reported include five staff of the sub-jail. They are all asymptomatic and we have shifted them to COVID care centres as per protocol,” added Behera.

Speaking about the lockdown and shutdown, Behera further said that “We are keeping an eye on the trend. We could take a decision on this after 2-3 days.”

Earlier in the day, the state recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,682 Covid-19 cases pushing the tally to 94,668 in the State. Currently, Odisha has 28,836 active cases and 65,323 recoveries. The toll has also risen to 456 with eight more deaths in the last 24 hours.

As far as the district of Rayagada is concerned, after the massive surge today, total positive cases in the district stand at 4,215 and active caseload is at 1,915. Similarly, while 2,278 patients have recovered from the disease, a total of 22 patients have died in the district till today.
