Cuttack: Tangi police on Saturday asked a group of six students and teachers to leave the madrasa run by suspected Al-Qaeda operative Abdur Rehman, who is currently in the custody of Delhi police for his alleged links with the terrorist outfit.
Police sources said the group from neighbouring Jharkhand has been asked to return to their native place as the religious educational institution was operating without due permission of the State Wakf Board after police had shut it down following Rehman’s arrest.
Police officials said arrangements will be made for the group’s safe return to Jharkhand.
During the investigation after the arrest of Rehman in December last, police also came to know that Rehman had not sought prior permission from Wakf Board to run the institution. Nearly 80 students, most of them from Jharkhand, were studying in the Madrasa before it was closed.
Delhi police and the Twin City Commissionerate Police had arrested 37-year-old Rehman from his house in the wee hours of December 16 in a joint operation. He was picked up from his house in Satabatia village under Paschimakachha area of Jagatpur police limits.
Later, he was booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Rehman, who ran the Madrasa in Tangi area, allegedly had links with a man involved in a failed car bomb attack at the Glasgow international airport in 2007, Odisha police had alleged.
The police had also said that he is a member of the Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and was radicalising youth for terror activities.
