Jajpur: Driven by acute poverty, a poor man of Ranpur village of Binjharpur block in Jajpur district has forced to sell his newborn daughter for Rs 6000.
Reports said Baikunthanath Rana had brought his pregnant wife Lata to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Binjharpur on Sunday where she gave birth to a daughter on the same day.
On the next day, the couple sold their daughter to a person with the help of an ASHA worker.
Following information, a team of officials of District Child Protection Unit arrived at Ranpur village today to inquire into the incident.
On interrogation, Rana admitted that he had sold his newborn daughter to a person at Rs 6000.
“I have two daughters and a son. I was worried over the birth of another daughter. As I am a poor man, I won’t be able to maintain another daughter for which I was forced to sell my newborn daughter to a person”, Rana said.
Asked about the incident, a doctor of Binjharpur CHC he has no knowledge about the incident.
