With Odisha reeling under one of the longest spells of heat wave, as many as three places from the state were among the ten hottest places in the world on Tuesday.
While Baripada in Mayurbhanj became the second hottest place in the world with 46.4 degrees Celsius, Balasore and Bhubaneswar were the third and tenth hottest places, respectively. Baripada's temperature reading of 46.4 degrees was an all-time high temperature for the city.

The hottest place in the world was Joba in Oman with 49.2 degrees Celsius.

Back in Odisha, the state, for the first time in the current season, witnessed mercury crossing the 46 degrees Celsius mark, turning it into a virtual hot cauldron.
15 places record 44 degrees Celsius or above
On Tuesday, as many as 15 places in Odisha recorded 44 degrees Celsius or above. After Baripada, the second hottest place was Balasore with 46 degrees Celsius followed by Bhubaneswar (45.4), Angul (44.7), Talcher, Dhenkanal and Jajpur, (44.5 each), Boudh (44.3), Jharsuguda, Cuttack and Kendrapara ( 44.2 each) and Titilagarh, Nayagarh, Nuapada and Bhadrak (44 each).
What IMD’s regional director said
“The department has issued red alerts for April 30, May 1 and May 2. For the next 24 hours, districts like Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur and Boudh have been issued red warnings. Orange warnings have been issued for the rest of the districts,” said Manorama Mohanty, director of Bhubaneswar regional centre of the IMD.
