Intense heatwave forces Odisha govt to alter office hours from 7AM to 1PM in Sambalpur
In response to the ongoing heatwave conditions, the Odisha government has announced new government office hours for Sambalpur. Starting today, offices will function from 07:00 AM to 1:00 PM without a lunch break, until June 15. This measure aims to ensure a better working environment for government employees during extreme temperatures.
“In pursuance of Order No. 14883/dated 04.04.2006, Govt of Odisha, Home Department, the State Government Offices, Revenue, and Executive Magistrate Courts shall be held this year on working days from 7 AM to 1 PM without a lunch break from 10th of April to 15th of June in Sambalpur District,” the letter read.
“Hence all concerned officers and staff are directed to attend their respective offices in the above stipulated time period fixed up by the Government of Odisha during the Summer season,” it further added.
Heatwave Impact
The change in office timings comes in the wake of record-high temperatures ravaging the region. Typically, the afternoons see the mercury soaring, making it difficult for people to commute and work efficiently. By concluding the workday early, officials hope to minimise exposure to the searing sun.
As per IMD reports, temperatures in western Odisha will remain higher. Moreover, other districts in the state are likely to experience similar conditions, approaching the 40-degree threshold.
Despite the low-pressure threat, there will likely be no large change in the maximum temperature (day temperature) during the next four to five days over the districts of the state, said the MeT department.
However, the day temperature is very likely to be equal to and above 40 degree Celsius in the isolated pocket districts of Jharsuguda, Bolangir, and Boudh.
Government Initiatives
Alongside changing the working hours, the Odisha government has also called upon residents to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions during peak heat hours.
