Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Sanjay Singh on Saturday hold an emergency meeting with top officials to discuss preparedness ahead of the ‘very severe cyclonic’ storm Yaas .

As Bhubaneswar is expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by strong wind under the influence of the cyclonic storm from May 25, more emphasis is likely to be given on cleaning the drainage systems in the city.

Moreover, Singh also reportedly discussed about the possible cyclone with the zonal deputy commissioners and Energy department officials during the meeting.

“We hold a meeting with all zonal deputy commissioners, Energy department officials, sanitation and drainage department officials, police and Fire Services Department to ensure all guidelines issued by the State Relief Commissioner (SRC) are followed,” said BMC Commissioner after the meeting.

“Works at major drainages or internal drainages have begun and it is being monitored regularly by the city engineers,” Singh added. 

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and it will subsequently intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm on May 24, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.

"The low-pressure is expected to intensify into deep depression tomorrow and into a cyclonic circulation on the morning of May 24. The cyclonic circulation will cross coasts between West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh as very severe cyclonic storm in the evening of May 26," said IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra while speaking to OTV on Saturday.
