OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, updated their ChatGPT platform with new capabilities, introduced the latest model, GPT-4o, on Monday. This new model combines the intelligence and features of GPT-4, bringing them to all users.

The event, hosted by OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, emphasised that GPT-4o is faster and incorporates OpenAI’s most advanced features.

During the event, CTO Murati discussed the updates to ChatGPT's desktop app, web UI, GPT-4o's free access, and live demonstrations of its capabilities. She stated that the goal of GPT-4o is "to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all humanity."

What is GPT-4o?

GPT-4o offers GPT-4 level intelligence but is much faster and improves capabilities across text, vision, and audio.

Murati described it as a significant step forward in ease of use, making human-to-machine interaction more natural and effortless.

The voice mode on GPT-4o efficiently recognises speakers' voices and integrates transcription, intelligence, and text-to-speech.

This integration reduces latency, providing a smoother experience across voice, text, and vision interactions, as Murati explained.

What are the capabilities of GPT-4o?

GPT-4o also includes a vision mode, allowing users to upload photos and documents and engages in conversations about them.

The Memory feature enables real-time information retrieval during conversations while OpenAI has enhanced quality and speed in 50 languages.

During the event, OpenAI’s research leads, Mark Chen and Barret Zoph showcased live demos. They demonstrated GPT-4o's ability to pick up on users' emotions and engage in emotive conversational styles.

Zoph also presented a math problem, testing ChatGPT's step-by-step problem-solving capabilities, which received attention on social media for its innovative features.
