Shubman Gill
BCCI selectors led by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar have recently appointed promising batter Shubman Gill as the captain of the Indian team in the longest format of the game ahead of the upcoming Test series against England.
Though there are many experienced players in the Indian team, the selectors want to give Gill a long rope as the Test captain keeping the next World Test Championship cycle on eye.
Many experts have also criticised the decision by stating that Gill is not worthy for Test captainship as his place is not even sure in the playing XI.
In response, former India Test captain and legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble said that captaining the Indian cricket team is different from leading in franchise cricket. However, the former India great is of the opinion that Shubman Gill is capable of figuring it out as he gears up to take charge of the Test side.
"Captaincy for India is slightly different to captaining a franchise or any state side; it comes with its own responsibilities and the pressure. But I’m sure Shubman will figure it out and I think he is capable," said Kumble during a recent interaction.

Transition is bound to happen and with three pillars of Indian cricket, for a long period of time, not being available. It’s got to be different for us too, as fans too, when the Indian cricket team takes the ground in the first Test, not to see three names there. It is going to be different so that’s something that I’m sure the dressing room will get used to over a period of time. But it’s the start of a young team and it’s a new cycle of WTC, which I’m sure this current team would look to win and then get into that final and hopefully hold the trophy one day, so that’s something that I’m sure Shubman will try and create that kind of a legacy," he added.
