R Ashwin bats for Ravindra Jadeja to be India's new Test captain

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

According to Ashwin, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team and he could be considered for the captaincy role in the longest format of the game, at least for the next two years.

Following the retirement of veteran cricketer Rohit Sharma, BCCI is all set to announce a new captain for Team India ahead of the upcoming England tour.

Though Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner for the captaincy role in the longest format of the game, many experts are of the opinion that premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be the next Test skipper.

However, former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to be the next captain of India in Tests.

According to Ashwin, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team and he could be considered for the captaincy role in the longest format of the game, at least for the next two years.

"Let's not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in the conversation. If you're willing to train a new guy for two years and then make him captain, Jadeja can do that for two years too. They (India) can even play him as vice-captain under Jadeja. It will seem like I'm throwing in a wildcard," said Ashwin on his official YouTube channel.

"I hope Gujarat Titans qualify for the IPL playoffs. If Gill gains honour there, it might make his transition to leadership easier. But captaincy, especially in Tests, is not about one good season. A leader should know what's happening in first-class cricket too," the former India spinner added.
