Barabati Stadium in Cuttack
The much-anticipated IPL 2025 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 6 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata is likely to be rescheduled due to security concerns. The Kolkata Police have declined to provide security clearance, citing the extensive Ram Navami celebrations across West Bengal.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has announced over 20,000 processions across the state for the festival, leading to increased security demands. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president, Snehasish Ganguly, confirmed after two discussions with the police that authorities could not ensure adequate security for the 65,000-capacity crowd.
"They have categorically said they won’t be able to provide adequate security. If there’s no police protection, accommodating a large crowd becomes impossible," Ganguly said to PTI.
With Eden Gardens unlikely to host the fixture, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been informed, and discussions are underway to finalise an alternative venue.
The Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, can emerge as a possible option due to its proximity and past experience of hosting IPL matches. With all the necessary infrastructure in place, recent upgrades to floodlights, and a cricket-loving crowd, the Silver City may see an IPL fixture coming its way.
In a similar situation last year, an IPL fixture had to be rescheduled due to security concerns on Ram Navami. With time still available, the BCCI is weighing all options before making a final decision.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the KKR vs LSG match, Eden Gardens remains the stage for IPL 2025’s opening ceremony on March 22. Defending champions KKR will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the season opener. The ceremony, lasting 35 minutes, is expected to feature performances by singer Shreya Ghoshal and actress Disha Patani.

ICC chairman Jay Shah and other dignitaries are likely to attend, marking the return of a grand opening at the venue after a long gap. KKR fans are hopeful that the April 6 fixture will be played nearby, if not at Eden Gardens. Meanwhile, the BCCI’s final decision in this regard is expected soon.
