Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell may miss the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season after suffering a finger injury, dealing a blow to the Punjab Kings. The all-rounder fractured his finger during a training session ahead of a rain-affected match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he managed just seven runs, adding to what has been a lacklustre season for him.
Maxwell's injury saw him replaced by Suryansh Shedge in the latest match against Chennai Super Kings, which Punjab Kings won by four wickets. Fellow Australian and teammate Marcus Stoinis remarked on Maxwell's situation, stating, "Unfortunately, Maxi's broken his finger. He first thought it was not serious, but scans revealed otherwise. It looks probable that he will miss the rest of the tournament," Stoinis shared with 'Jiostar'.
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Punjab Kings, outlined the current strategy for coping with Maxwell's absence. Speaking at a press conference, Ponting acknowledged the challenge in finding a substitute yet expressed optimism about the potential within their squad. "We have some replacements in mind before our 12th game. Players like Azmatullah Omarzai and Aaron Hardie, who are yet to play, might be given a chance," Ponting noted.
Ponting hinted at a possible reliance on Indian players due to the limitations posed by other ongoing international leagues. He said, "To be honest, there aren't many top-notch substitutes currently available. We're diligently scouting Indian players, with some prospects training with us recently. They may soon earn a contract with Punjab Kings." The team plans to assess new talents once they reach Dharamsala, where conditions that favour swing and bounce could influence their player choices.
