Viability of BJD’s free electricity promise to 90 per cent consumers questioned

BJD has promised free electricity to 90% of families in Odisha, drawing skepticism about its feasibility. Critics label it a political ploy, noting discrepancies in the number of beneficiaries and questioning the practicality of such a scheme based on current consumption patterns.

BJD's poll promise of free electricity

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), in its poll plank, has promised free electricity to nearly 90 per cent of the families in Odisha. However, questions are being raised on how far the promise will be practicable in reality and how many people will benefit from it.

The opposition parties and the Odisha Electricity Consumers’ Association have denounced the idea.
