With the stage being set for crucial elections in Odisha and it being the time for the illegal flow of cash and other items to influence voters, massive surveillance is underway in different parts of the state. Due to strict enforcement and surveillance, around Rs 20 lakh was seized from a car during checking near Bhadrasahi under Barbil police limits in Keonjhar district on Friday.

Fearing detention, the driver and some occupants escaped after abandoning the vehicle, sources said. The cash was stuffed inside a bag and was kept inside the car. Senior police officials reached the spot and started an investigation to ascertain the owner of the vehicle and the source of the cash.

It is suspected that the cash was meant for distribution during the elections as no claimant came forward till the filing of the report. CCTV footage is being examined as part of further investigation into the matter.
