The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday alleged massive irregularities in the Public Distribution System (PDS) and claimed that there are around 5 lakh 'ghost beneficiaries' under the scheme in the State.

The BJP also demanded details of the beneficiaries of the food security scheme in the State. The BJP State secretary Tankadhar Tripathy alleged that the Odisha government is looting food and non-food items (meant for the poor) provided by the Centre during the Covid pandemic.

Alleging mismatch in the list of beneficiaries who are receiving financial assistance and those getting food items under the scheme, Tripathy said that Odias working outside the State are unable to get the benefits under the Centre's 'One Nation One Ration Card' scheme as the Odisha government is not implementing the same in the State.

He further alleged irregularities in the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana and said that due to several lacunas in the ration card distribution and presence of ghost beneficiaries, the actual beneficiaries are being deprived of the scheme in the State.

It is pertinent to mention here that in view of the pandemic, the State government had announced allocation of ration for two months in advance to PDS beneficiaries- five kg subsidised rice/wheat and kerosene to each family member of a beneficiary.

Comments of the ruling-BJD could not be obtained over the allegations of BJP.
