The Odisha government has plans to construct a world-class road network in the State in five years. Accordingly, a total of 15,000 kilometres of 'state-of-the-art' roads are to be constructed, official sources said on Friday.
Besides, the Works Department has also planned to construct different types of roads including State Highways (SHs) – 4,112 Km, Major District Roads (MDR) – 2,632 Km, and Other District Roads (ODR) – 22,866 Km, totaling to – 29,610 Km.
In addition, the Department has chalked out the details for construction and maintenance of 5,753 Km. of National Highways (NHs).
Notably, the Government plans for major upgradation of the infrastructure in Bhubaneswar to ease traffic congestion. This will include several development projects.
An elevated corridor will connect Jaydev Vihar to Nandankanan, with flyovers at Kalpana Square and Museum Square. New road over-bridge (ROB) on Museum Road, underground roads at AG Square, and development of inner and outer ring roads are also parts of the proposed development works.
Decongestion plan for Bhubaneswar city includes construction of an elevated corridor from Jaydev Vihar to Nandankanan, improvement of Canal Road from Baranga to Jatni through Patia Station Chhak, NH-16 and Suang village (Daya West Canal Road).
Construction of flyover at Kalpana Square and Museum Square, construction of a ROB from Sishu Bhawan to Museum Square, construction of underpass at AG Square, construction of road from Kalarahang to Barimund and Guru Kelucharan Park to Phulanakhara with a new Railway Over Bridge, construction of Inner and Outer Ring Road are parts of the plan.
Budget for the FY 2025-26, under Administrative Expenditure is Rs 2,996 Crore 68 Lakh 32 Thousand and Programme Expenditure is Rs 9,451 Crore 75 Lakh. Thus, the total Budget is Rs 12,448 Crore 43 Lakh 32 thousand.
