Two sisters drown in pond at uncle's house in Odisha

In a tragic incident, two young sisters lost their lives after accidentally drowning in a pond at Bhutanasi village in Bhadrak district on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Chandini Mandal and Nandini Mandal.

According to reports, the children were on a visit to their maternal uncle’s house along with their parents, as their uncle was reportedly unwell. The family belongs to Ratan Mandal of Karanpalli village, and they had gone to the house of his in-laws, specifically to the residence of Purnachandra Das.

For reasons yet unknown, the two sisters accidentally fell into a nearby pond. After an extensive search by the family members, the girls were found in the pond and were immediately rescued.

They were reportedly rushed to the Basudevpur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared both of them dead upon arrival.

A pall of gloom has descended on the area following the tragic incident. The community is in mourning after the heartbreaking loss.

"Both the children had come to our house along with my daughter and son-in-law. We don't know why they went to the pond. We started a search operation when they went missing. Eventually, they were found drowned in the pond," said Purnachandra Das, the grandfather of the deceased children.

Earlier in May this year, a young man lost his life after a group of four entered the Shivaganga pond within the premises of the Akhandalamani temple in Bhadrak to perform a customary ritual bath before offering prayers.
