Two candidates allegedly died while appearing for the physical examination test of the Odisha Sub-ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) at separate locations on Tuesday. 

The deceased have been identified as Praveen Kumar Panda, a resident of Rourkela and Byomkesh Nayak of Keonjhar.

According to reports, Praveen Kumar Panda allegedly died during the 25 km race in Sundergarh, a part of the physical test for the recruitment into OSSSC forest guard, forester and livestock inspector.

Government Response and Ex-Gratia Announcement

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each for the families of two aspirants who passed away during the physical test conducted by OSSSC.

The compensation will be provided from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, as stated by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

OSSC Recruitment Process Context

The tragic incidents occurred during Phase-III physical testing for 569 vacancies across various posts. The recruitment drive involves rigorous physical tests including 25km running, high jump and weight carrying - requirements criticized by some as excessively demanding.

Safety Concerns and Protocol Review

These deaths have raised questions about safety measures during physical endurance tests. Opposition leaders and civil society groups are demanding revised protocols, including mandatory medical screenings and emergency response teams at test locations.

Earlier, in 2021, one candidate lost his life, and four others fell ill while undergoing the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) during police constable recruitment drives at various locations in Odisha.
