Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, launched 40 new electric buses on Friday, furthering the state's commitment to sustainable urban transport and control pollution.

The initiative was part of the Prime Minister's E-Bus Service Scheme, which aims to deploy a total of 400 electric buses across Odisha.

Infrastructure Development

The state is making significant strides in infrastructure to support this growing transportation network. Two new bus depots at  Pokhari put in Bhubaneswar, and at Naraj in Cuttack, are on the brink of completion.

"Out of a fleet of 560 buses in our service, 180 are currently electric. These buses currently serve key cities like Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Rourkela, Brahmapur, and Sambalpur," said the Minister.

Public Transport Usage

"Every day, more than 300,000 passengers utilise these electric buses, which underscores the increasing reliance on green public transport options within the region," the Minister said.

This move towards electrification highlights Odisha's dedication to reducing its carbon footprint whilst improving urban mobility for its residents.

"We have launched 40 new electric buses today. More electric buses will run on the roads as per the demand and requirement. There was a huge demand for electric bus service from the Capital Hospital till SCB Medical College and Hospital. The bus service covering the spots will start from today. The amount of pollution will reduce after the start of electric bus service. It will also promote sustainable urban transport," said Minister Mahapatra.
