Parents of the deceased minor boy Ayan Patra
Ayan Patra, a six-year-old from Baripada town in Mayurbhanj district, provided a profound example of compassion as his organs were donated bringing new lease of life to two others. Ayan's kidneys were used to save two patients after he was pronounced brain dead by medical professionals.
According to sources, the incident occurred on May 6 when Ayan was gravely injured by a falling gate while playing with his friends. Initially treated at a facility in Baripada, Ayan was subsequently moved to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar due to the severity of his condition.
Despite medical efforts, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar declared him brain dead.
Facing unimaginable grief, Ayan's family made the altruistic choice to donate his organs, a heroic decision that underscores their magnanimity and the potential for organ donation to transform lives.
In coordination with healthcare teams from the AIIMS and another private hospital in Bhubaneswar, successful transplants were conducted, extending the lives of two grateful recipients.
Ayan's story serves as a poignant reminder of the power of selfless giving amid personal tragedy.
“We (Patra couple) will never get back our child, whatever we do in this regard. There are many parents who badly need different organs for their children. Hence, we both decided to donate the organs and save their lives,” Ayan’s father, Srikrushna Patra said.
“Obviously, we cannot preserve his body for long days and will dispose it of somewhere. At least, if we go for cadaver donation, his organs will continue to live in others in his absence,” the bereaved Srikrushna said.
