Odisha officials meet Odia minor boys at hospital
At least four tourists from Odisha, including a woman BJP leader, Itishree Jena, are still missing after a tourist vehicle plunged 1000 feet into the Teesta River between Chungthang and Munshithang in north Sikkim’s Mangan district on Thursday evening.
Despite extensive rescue operations conducted throughout yesterday, there has been no trace of the missing persons.
As per reports, the ongoing search and rescue efforts have been severely hindered by heavy rainfall and continuous landslides in the region, which have disrupted accessibility and posed risks to rescue personnel.
One of the major concerns is the rising water level of the Teesta River, which has increased fears of further complications. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as weather conditions continue to deteriorate, making the rescue mission even more challenging.
Odia Officials Arrive in Sikkim to Assess Situation
In response to the emergency, the Odisha government has dispatched a two-member team of senior transport officials to Sikkim. The team, comprising Additional Transport Commissioner Deeptiranjan Patra and Joint Transport Commissioner Bikash Choudhury, is currently stationed in Gangtok. Their objective is to coordinate with local authorities, assess the ground situation, and ensure the safe return of affected Odia tourists.
The intervention follows direct instructions from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, who prioritised the safety and repatriation of the stranded individuals.
Two Injured Odia Minors Under Treatment
Among those rescued are two Odia minor boys who were found in critical condition. They have been admitted to Gangtok Hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.
The visiting Odisha officials have met the hospital authorities and are closely monitoring the health status of the children, ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention.
"Around 11 persons including BJP Mahila Morcha State Secretary Itishree Jena and her family members had a tour to Gangtok from Jajpur road in two vehicles. However, one vehicle plunged into the river. Her younger son and nephew have been rescued in critical condition. Rescue operations are on to trace rest of them," said BJP leader Akash Dasnayak.
