Odisha Crime Branch in Jharsuguda
The Odisha Crime Branch has intensified its investigation into the high-profile murder case of former state Health Minister Naba Kishore Das, with senior officials reaching Jharsuguda for the second phase of the inquiry.
Sources stated that on the second day of this renewed effort, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vijay Mallik appeared before the Jharsuguda District Court, sparking fresh momentum in the case that had shaken Odisha's political and administrative circles last year.
Reports added that the Crime Branch was now deliberating on submitting the final chargesheet in the case. Earlier, a preliminary chargesheet had already been filed, which formed the basis of the ongoing judicial hearings.
With the reinvestigation underway, it is expected that new elements or clarifications might be added to the final report, which could further solidify the prosecution's case.
One of the key questions now is whether the Crime Branch will interrogate additional individuals during this stage. While speculation is rife, officials have so far remained tight-lipped about any new suspects or witnesses.
Naba Das, a senior BJD leader and Odisha's Health Minister at the time, was shot dead on January 29, 2023, in Brajarajnagar, Jharsuguda district, by an on-duty police officer, ASI Gopal Das.
The attack occurred in full public view and was caught on camera, leading to widespread outrage. Gopal Das was immediately arrested and charged with murder, but questions around motive, mental health, and possible conspiracies have kept the case in headlines ever since.

Given the political gravity of the case, the Crime Branch has faced sustained pressure to deliver a transparent and conclusive investigation. While the accused officer's mental health had been cited in early reports, opposition leaders and members of the public have continued to demand answers regarding possible larger conspiracies behind the killing.
