Police on Friday exhumed the dead body of a woman from a forest near Murumadihi under Raighar Police limits in Nabarangpur district. Shockingly, during exhumation, police reportedly recovered the body in 31 pieces.  

The deceased woman has been identified as Tilabati Gond, a resident of Baghabeda village. Till the time of filing of this report, the reason behind this heinous crime was yet to be established.

According to the family members, Tilabati left her house on Wednesday saying she was going somewhere, and never returned. The next day, the family members and the villagers searched for her everywhere and came to know that she had been buried after being murdered. They immediately informed the police. The deceased woman’s father also lodged a complaint at the Raighar Police Station on Saturday, alleging his daughter was murdered.

On the basis of the complaint, the police launched a probe and learned she was murdered and buried at a place in a forest near Murumadihi village. 

A team from the Raighar Police Station along with a scientific team reached the forest. A particular spot was dug and 31 pieces of the missing woman were exhumed. 

Sources said, the police have detained a couple from Murumadihi village. The couple, identified as Chandra Rout and his wife, is being interrogated in the police station.  

Informing about the incident, a villager said, “Chandra Rout had killed Tilabati on Thursday night. When the police exhumed the body, it was found to have been cut into 31 pieces. We demand exemplary punishment to be handed down to the culprits and justice to the deceased woman’s family members.”

“We can’t say who has murdered her but we want justice,” said the brother of the deceased, Kesnath Gond. 

When asked, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Aditya Sen said, “A villager named Luduram Gond had lodged a complaint that his daughter had been murdered and buried. On the basis of his complaint, we launched an investigation and exhumed the body today. In this connection, we have detained two persons.”

However, he refused to say anything about the condition of the body when it was exhumed.
