Food Supplies Minister Krushna Patra speaking to media
Farmers are increasingly concerned over significant crop losses impacting their livelihoods due to recent incessant rainfall in southern Odisha districts. Bringing a solace to them, Food Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra addressed these challenges, on Thursday.
Announcing that District Collectors are to decide on relaxation of the Fair Average Quality (FAQ) standards, he stressed the minimum quality standards will not be compromised.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is set firmly against procuring grains that do not meet certain standards; apparently, it would leave paddy crops to spoil. However, the Revenue Minister has assured that compensation will be provided to those who suffer crop loss.
The Food Supplies Minister urged farmers not to leave mandis empty-handed but emphasised that only crops meeting the required standards will be procured, leaving unsellable produce behind. He encouraged farmers to continue bringing in whatever they could for sale, assuring the farmers of fair and proper evaluations.
“FAQ standards cannot be compromised as those are decided at national level. However, the District Collectors will take a final call as to how relaxation can be done. The Collectors will also decide on paddy that can be procured, based on damages (due to rain). Revenue Minister has already cleared the air in this regard,” the Food Supplies Minister said.
“Affected farmers need not worry and they will certainly be given their due compensation. The District Collectors have already been directed to give relaxation to the maximum possible extent. No farmer will be harassed,” Food Supplies Minister Patra stated.
“Natural calamities will come and go. Odisha Government will compensate the crop loss by standing beside farmers as a Raksha Kavach,” Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari had said.
