The inter-ministerial central team led by Saurav Ray, Joint Secretary (CEPI), Ministry of Home Affairs, is scheduled to conduct an intensive survey in the districts affected by the cyclone Jawad.
An inter-ministerial central team is set to arrive in Odisha today for on-spot detail assessment of damages caused by cyclonic storm Jawad.
As if the devastation caused to the paddy and vegetable crops by cyclone ‘Jawad’ induced heavy rain was not enough, the recent two-day-long downpour triggered by a trap-line has dealt a severe blow to the farmers in the State.
Though cyclone Jawad which has weakened into a low pressure area ceased to cause any major damage but it triggered extremely heavy to heavy rainfall in several parts of the State, particularly in the coastal and northern parts, damaging standing crops and inundating several low-lying areas.
Though some of the farmers were able to harvest the crops, they failed to shift the yield to safer places in due time. The croppers have expressed huge concerns that if the wet conditions continue for a longer period, it would eventually wipe out any chance of break-even in the production of the crops.
The famers in most parts of Semulia block in Balasore district are worried a lot as earlier bulk of the standing crops were damaged by 'Chakada’ worms, also known as Brown Plant Hoppers.
As several districts in Odisha reel under drought-like situation, a farmer in Bolangir district ended his life over alleged crop loss by consuming poison. As per reports, the deceased farmer, identified as Rechaka Banchor (60) of Kadobera village under Tureikela block, allegedly consumed poison on Thursday.
Rohidas was under severe mental stress due to the huge losses he had suffered due to crop failure. The problem was aggravated when he faced difficulties in selling his paddy stock.
