Railway job scam: Aspirants duped of Rs 65 lakh, accused nabbed in Berhampur
In a major crackdown on a railway job fraud racket, police in Berhampur have arrested a man accused of duping several individuals of over Rs 65 lakh by promising them employment in Indian Railways.
The accused, identified as A. Vighneshwar Rao Dora of Kukudakhandi area, was taken into custody by Berhampur Sadar Police and produced before the court on Friday.
Fake Job Promise, Forged Documents Used in the Racket
According to the initial police reports, Vighneshwar allegedly lured victims by falsely claiming to have influence over senior railway officials and assured them jobs in various departments.
One of the complainants, S Krushnachandra Dora from Kansamari village under Patapur police limits, was promised a railway job and even introduced to a man posing as a high-ranking official.
Vighneshwar also took money from at least four other individuals, collecting Rs 16 lakh from them under the pretext of securing railway employment.
To convince his targets, the accused reportedly provided forged admit cards, conducted fake examinations, and arranged medical tests in Kolkata, all designed to create an illusion of legitimate recruitment.
Shockingly, he even issued fabricated treasury challans and created counterfeit websites resembling official railway portals to bolster the credibility of the process.
No Jobs, No Refunds: Victims Take Legal Route
Despite initial formalities, none of the promised jobs materialised, and the victims stopped receiving updates. Attempts to contact Vighneshwar and his alleged accomplices proved futile, prompting the victims to approach the police.
Following the complaint, Berhampur Sadar Police launched an investigation and arrested Vighneshwar. Several incriminating documents, including fake appointment letters and forged railway papers, were seized during the operation.
“We received a complaint and acted on it to nab the accused. We found that he had asked for Rs 12 lakh from two youths in Berhampur, promising them a high-ranking railway job. He won the trust of the victims with an elaborate setup. As of the current investigation, he has accumulated over Rs 65 lakh in total from several victims,” said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M.
Meanwhile, police sources said they are probing the involvement of other individuals linked to the racket and whether similar frauds were committed in other regions.
