Traffic checking
The government has decided to suspend the driving license of those who do not pay their traffic e-challan within three months. Furthermore, the license of those who have accumulated more than three e-challans (fine) for jumping red signal or dangerous driving, in a financial year, could be confiscated for at least three months, reports said.
On the other hand, the government is also reportedly preparing a strategy to link higher insurance premiums, if one has at least two pending challans from the previous financial year.
The measures come after government data reveals that barely 40% recover of e-challan amounts or fines for traffic rule violations are large-scale non-compliance.
The details have been worked out following a Supreme Court order to file compliance reports indicating the implementation of electronic monitoring as provided in the Central Motor Vehicles Act Section 136A of the Act.
As per government data, Delhi has the lowest rate of fine recovery (14%) followed by Karnataka (24%), Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh (27%) with Odisha remaining at 29%.
As per reports, an e-challan notice will be sent to a driver or vehicle owner within three days. The recipient is then required to pay the fine within 30 days or challenge it.
However, non-payment within 3 months or 9 months will lead to suspension of driving license (DL) or registration certificate (RC), till the payment is made.
If the grievance authority fails to resolve any customer’s complaint within 30 days, the challan will be quashed.
