Odisha villagers block National Highway 326 near Ganjam over delayed road repair by contractors
Traffic came to a halt on the Berhampur–Rayagada main road on Friday after residents near Maulabhanja village staged a blockade. The residents staged the protest, alleging negligence and delay on the part of the contractor responsible for road construction.
Villagers sat on the highway, demanding immediate action to repair the stretch of National Highway 326 that they claim has become hazardous.
According to the protestors, nearly 40 kilometres of the highway remain completely damaged, filled with potholes and debris. The villagers alleged that the contractor has been delaying the work arbitrarily, leaving the road in a dangerous condition. They further stated that despite repeated complaints, no remedial steps have been taken by the concerned authorities.
The damaged stretch has reportedly become a hotspot for accidents, with mishaps occurring almost daily. Protestors said the poor condition of the road has led to repeated loss of lives and property, yet no effective measures have been implemented to prevent further tragedies.
Locals pointed out that nearly Rs 140 crore had been invested in the repair and construction of the highway. However, they alleged that the work has neither been carried out properly nor completed on time.
The blockade led to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road, with traffic paralysed for several hours. Villagers warned that unless prompt action is taken to restore the highway, they will intensify their agitation.
