Odisha unveils bigger aviation plans: New Greenfield airport in this city, heliports in 15 districts and more

Marking a significant step towards enhancing the state’s aviation infrastructure, the Odisha government has unveiled plans for a new Greenfield airport in Paradip. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in a key meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, expressed that the state's airports aim to reach global standards, with an emphasis on modernisation and expansion.

Accelerating Puri's Airport Preparations

The Chief Minister has called for the swift progression of the Shri Jagannath Airport in Puri. The state is prioritising this project to boost connectivity and accommodate increased air traffic. 

Plans are also reportedly underway to create heliports in 15 districts, reflecting a broad strategy to enhance Odisha's aerial connectivity.

Development of Heliports and Aviation Centres

Proposals for constructing heliports in 15 districts to improve regional access are also included. Discussions included the future development of the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre at the Birashole airstrip in Dhenkanal, with the Public Works Department designated as the nodal agency to expedite these efforts.

Rourkela and Major Airport Upgrades

The meeting addressed plans to upgrade the Rourkela Airport. To further enhance connectivity within Odisha, attention is being given to major airports across the state, including those in Jeypore, Dandabose, Rangeilunda, Gotama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela.

Focus on World-Class Infrastructure

Chief Minister Majhi reaffirmed the commitment to establish world-class aviation facilities throughout the state, comprising airports, heliports, and drone hubs. 

The reorganisation of the Directorate of Civil Aviation was also discussed, introducing proposals for state-of-the-art infrastructure and enhanced human resources, aiming to strengthen Odisha's aviation sector.
