Odisha tehsildar Madhusmita Singh arrested in Rs 4 Crore fund embezzlement

Odisha Crime Branch’s Economic Offences Wing arrested suspended tehsildar Madhusmita Singh for allegedly embezzling Rs 4 crore during her tenure as Executive Officer of Belpahar Municipality. The arrest followed a detailed investigation into fund mismanagement linked to urban projects. Singh now faces serious corruption charges amid growing concerns about transparency in municipal governance.

In a major development on Tuesday, Odisha Crime Branch’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested Madhusmita Singh, the suspended tehsildar of Jamda in Mayurbhanj district. She was arrested on serious allegations of misappropriating Rs 4 crore government funds.

According to official sources, Singh was previously serving as the Executive Officer (EO) of Belpahar Municipality in Jharsuguda district, where the alleged financial irregularities had taken place. While holding that post, she was involved in several projects, including a streetlight installation scheme.

Complaints had emerged about large-scale mismanagement of funds, irregularities in the cashbook, and suspected corruption.

Following a detailed probe by the EOW, tehsildar Singh was found allegedly responsible for the diversion and misuse of approximately Rs 4 crore in public money. The arrest was made after substantial evidence was collected during the investigation.

At the time of her arrest, she was posted as the tehsildar of Jamda in Mayurbhanj district. The case highlights growing concerns over transparency and accountability in the execution of urban development projects at the municipal level.

Authorities confirmed that further investigations are still underway, and more arrests or administrative action may follow.

However, no comments were received from the EOW in this regard.

Tehsildar Madhusmita Singh was placed under suspension on August 30 with immediate effect. It was further ordered that during the period of her suspension, when the order is in force, the headquarters of Singh shall be at the Office of the Rairangpur Sub-Collector.

“Smt. Singh shall not leave the headquarters without obtaining the prior permission of the Collector, Mayurbhanj, and she shall be entitled to the payment of subsistence allowance in accordance with Rule 90 of Odisha Service Code,” an official notification mentioned.
