Notorious criminal injured in police encounter in Sambalpur
A notorious criminal was critically injured during police encounter at Rangiatikra area under Kuchinda police station in Sambalpur on Sunday.
The criminal, who has sustained severe injury in the process, has been identified as Sitaram Sarangi.
As per sources, associated with more than 25 crimes, including murder, robbery, and theft across Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts, Sarangi was intercepted by police forces.
The incident reportedly took place as the police endeavoured to apprehend Sarangi in connection with a burglary case registered at Gobindapur Police Station. As officers approached, Sarangi allegedly fired shots at them, instigating a return of gunfire from the police.
During the confrontation, Sarangi sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg. Subsequently, he was overpowered by the police. After receiving preliminary medical care at Kuchhinda Hospital, he was transferred to Burla for additional treatment. Sarangi is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is stated to be stable.
Police reportedly seized a country-made firearm, a bullet, and two live cartridges from Sarangi's possession after he sustained critical injury following the encounter. They also recovered Rs 100,000 in cash and an unregistered motorcycle from the location.

The police operation has drawn public and media attention due to Sarangi's infamy in the region, with many awaiting further developments in the case.
Earlier some days back, as many as two notorious looters were injured in an encounter by Commissionerate Police during an operation under Badagada police station area in Bhubaneswar.
