In an age dominated by science and technology, a bizarre and disturbing incident from the Udala area in Mayurbhanj has left many clueless and superstitious after a young girl behaved strangely, with her activities mirroring that of a snake, including crawling and hissing.
Shockingly, she claims to suffer injuries when the snake is beaten with a stick. Furthermore, she even rolled on the ground, hissing like a snake, repeatedly pleading, “Don’t kill me”, when the efforts are being made to catch the snake.
The unusual episode, which unfolded recently, has ignited widespread concern and intense debate around lingering superstitions.
According to sources, a venomous cobra had reportedly entered a home in Udala, following which a snake rescue team was alerted, and a member of the Snake Helpline promptly arrived at the location.
However, just as the team attempted to rescue the snake, the situation took a strange and alarming turn.
The homeowner’s daughter suddenly collapsed to the floor and began mimicking the movements and sounds of a snake. Eyewitnesses say she began slithering across the floor, making snake-like hissing noises, and weeping as she said, “Don’t take me,” “Don’t hurt me,” and “I haven’t harmed anyone,” leaving everyone present stunned.

Family members revealed that this wasn’t the first time the girl had exhibited such behaviour. Similar incidents had occurred during previous religious occasions like Nag Panchami and Basant Panchami. They further claimed that during those times, snake-like marks appeared on her body as well.
Locals added that a few days ago, a snake had been attacked inside the house, and since then, marks resembling beatings had appeared on the girl’s body, fuelling fears of divine retribution or possession.
“All of a sudden, she began acting strangely and did not allow the snake to be taken out of the house. We will now take her to a local temple and seek a remedy,” said the girl’s father.

While the family believes the girl’s reaction may be connected to the earlier incident involving the snake, others are questioning the scientific validity of such claims. No medical or psychological evaluation has yet been conducted to determine the cause of the girl’s behaviour.
The incident has reignited conversations on superstition in rural Odisha, especially when such events attract attention without scientific inquiry.
