Odisha Anganwadi worker publicly harassed in kangaroo court for marrying outside her caste

In a shocking case of caste-based discrimination, an Anganwadi worker from Bandhapada village in Thutibar, Nuapada district, was allegedly subjected to harassment at a kangaroo court by locals for marrying outside her caste.

According to reports, the woman was physically assaulted and publicly harassed when she arrived at the Anganwadi center to report for duty. Villagers reportedly barred her from entering the premises and held an informal gathering where she was questioned and humiliated for her inter-caste marriage.

Viral videos of the incident have been widely circulated on social media, sparking outrage and drawing attention to the plight of grassroots-level workers in rural Odisha. The victim lodged a formal complaint at Komna Police Station on July 21, alleging continued harassment and obstruction from performing her official duties due to her personal life choices.

However, some village residents claimed that the worker had been irregular in attending the center and denied all allegations of assault or mistreatment. Speaking on the matter, the Superintendent of Police, Nuapada, confirmed that an investigation is currently underway and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

“The Anganwadi worker had also lodged a written complaint. We have held a meeting with both parties. Proper action will be taken in this regard,” informed Nuapada SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra, IPS.

This incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced by women workers, especially those confronting societal taboos and caste prejudices in rural areas.
