Odia New Year begins with festive spirit of Pana Sankranti, Hanuman Jayanti; special rituals observe
Odisha woke up on Monday immersed in festive fervour to celebrate the Maha Bishuba Sankranti, also known as Pana Sankranti, marking the start of the Odia New Year. Further, unique to the state, this auspicious occasion coincides with Hanuman Jayanti, commemorating the birth of Lord Hanuman, adding a further spirit of religious devotion and calling for the start of a blessed new year.
Pana Sankranti: The Start of the Odia New Year
Maha Bishuba Sankranti signifies the Sun's transition into Mesha (Aries), marking the commencement of the Odia solar calendar. Notably, this celestial event is celebrated with various rituals and traditions across the state and marks the start of a fresh Odia calendar, also known as the Panjika.
A central aspect of the festivities is the preparation of Pana, a traditional sweet and cooling beverage made from ingredients like wood apple, jaggery, and seasonal fruits.
Additionally, this drink is offered to deities and shared among community members, symbolising the onset of the summer season and the hope for a bountiful harvest.
In many Odia households, a small earthen pot known as Basundhara Theki is placed on the Tulsi Chaura (a sacred basil altar). In a beautiful symbolism, the pot is filled with water and has a small hole at the bottom, allowing water to drip slowly, representing the sustenance of life during the hot summer months.

Today, devotees will also observe the Hanuman Jayanti, which celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, known for his devotion to Lord Rama and immense strength. To mark the festivities, temples dedicated to Hanuman will witness special prayers, chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa, and various religious activities.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) dedicated the new Odia calendar to the Holy Trinity at the PuriJagannath Temple in the presence of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The same almanac will come into effect today.
