Utkal Divas celebrations in Surat

The city of Surat in Gujarat, popularly known as 'Mini Odisha', burst into a kaleidoscope of colours as the Odia community celebrated Utkal Divas. The Sachin Jagannath Ground was the central hub for the festivities.

Hosted by the Surat Odia Welfare Organisation, the festival saw an impressive display of traditional art forms, music, and dance native to Odisha. 

Mesmerising Performances

Attendees of the event were treated to mesmerising dance performances, showcasing the rhythmic vibrancy and cultural richness of Odisha. The Sachin Jagannath Ground came alive with the beats of traditional music and the dancers’ graceful movements, captivating the audience.

Community & Cultural Pride

Beyond entertainment, the festival served as a significant meeting ground for the community, where people connected through shared heritage and cultural pride. Sandeep Desai, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Chaurasi, graced the occasion with his presence, underscoring the cultural importance of the event for the local Odia population.

The Surat Odia Welfare Organisation emphasised that such events not only unite the community in celebration but also ensure the younger generation engages with their rich traditions.

Historical Significance of Utkal Divas

Utkal Divas commemorates Odisha's formation as India's first linguistically-based state on April 1, 1936, following decades of activism led by Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati and others. The separation from Bengal Presidency marked a triumph for Odia linguistic identity and cultural preservation.
